Guidelines for Establishing a National Red List Programme
As the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) asks countries to report on trends of species extinction risk in national reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), they must ensure that red listing at the national scale is prioritised as part of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and that national red listing programmes of work are established or strengthened. Setting up a national Red List programme involves careful thought to ensure the national Red List is robust, well-managed and sustainable. Building on many years' experience in all aspects of red listing, in 2024 the National Red List Working Group of the IUCN Red List Scientific Committee published step-by-step guidance to help countries develop their own national Red List programmes.
The Guidelines for Establishing a National Red List Programme are available in English, French and Spanish.
